Why Buy Lab Created Diamonds?
Are lab-grown diamonds real?
Lab-created diamonds are the same in chemical makeup as those extracted from the earth. One difference exists: scientists culture one in a lab, while they mine the other from within the earth. The materials of these diamonds, whether created inside the earth or made in a lab, are identical. Natural diamonds are also available at Jacob Mercari.
How are lab diamonds grown?
Labs grow diamonds using two methods: HPHT (high pressure, high temperature) and CVD (chemical vapor deposition).
Both methods start with a seed or a small piece of diamond.
HPHT uses high pressure and temperatures to help diamonds grow, similar to how they naturally form in the earth.
The CVD method involves placing a diamond seed in a contained environment, adding heat and carbon-rich gases. The gases ionize into plasma.
The lab performs this process at low pressure. This allows the molecular bonds to break in the gases and the carbon molecules to bond to the seed. In layers, the diamond seed will grow in size.
CVD also creates diamonds of various colours, such as rich blue and pink lab-made diamonds.
Do lab-created diamonds have flaws?
No two diamonds are manufactured the same. Each lab diamond will exhibit unique characteristics and inclusions. All lab diamonds will exhibit the same imperfections and colour differences found in mined diamonds. The grading standard for engineered diamonds is the same as that for their earth-mined counterpart, which is the 4Cs grading standard.
Are lab-grown diamonds certified by the GIA?
GIA certifies lab-grown diamonds. The GIA offers an extremely detailed diamond report.
The report number for each lab-grown diamond is laser inscribed on the edge or girdle of the diamond for tracing and transparency. You can check the report number by visiting the GIA website or scanning the QR code on the diamond report. The report enters greater detail as well to identify three types of lab-grown diamonds.
- man-made diamond produced by HPHT – High Pressure High Temperature
- man-made diamond produced by CVD – Chemical Vapor Deposition
- Post growth color enhanced/treated CVD grown.
This offers further transparency for the diamond buyer. The customer will know exactly which process we used to create their laboratory-grown diamond.
A trained gemologist certifies each man-made diamond. We provide a full grading certificate from GIA, IGI or GCAL.
How much do engineered diamonds cost?
Manufactured diamonds are less expensive than natural mined diamonds. Therefore, the cost of a lab diamond will be significantly lower than a comparable mined diamond. The price will primarily depend on the diamond’s carat, colour, clarity and cut.
Also known as synthetic diamonds, manufactured diamond, and engineered diamonds.
- Chemically identical in makeup to mined diamonds.
- Their chemical composition is carbon.
- Both types of diamonds have a cubic crystalline structure.
- Both measure ten on the Mohs Hardness Scale.
- Light dispersion for lab-created and mined diamonds measures 0.044.
- On the Refractive Index, they both measure 2.42 and have a density of 3.52.

The Benefits of Lab-Grown Diamonds
- Lab-grown diamonds emit less carbon, use less water, and cause less disruption to the earth than traditional mining.
- Lab-grown diamonds solve problems like conflict diamonds, unfair labor, and other ethical issues linked to mining.
- Lab-grown diamonds are less expensive than mined diamonds that are the same size and quality. This means that buyers have the option to choose larger stones or higher quality diamonds within their budget.

Diamond jewelry can be cared for by regular cleaning with mild soap and warm water. Using a soft brush can help remove any dirt or dust. It’s also recommended to have your diamond jewelry inspected by a professional at least once a year to ensure the setting is secure.
No, you can’t tell the difference just by looking at them. They are both composed of carbon and have the same physical, chemical, and optical properties. Only specialized equipment can identify the subtle differences in trace elements and crystal growth patterns. Click here for our detailed guide about lab-grown diamonds.
Yes. Because the process of creating laboratory-grown diamonds is more controllable and less resource-intensive, they can be sold at a lower price than mined diamonds without compromising quality or appearance.
Lab-grown diamonds are graded by the same criteria as mined diamonds – Cut, Colour, Clarity, and Carat weight.
Absolutely! Lab grown diamond is perfect for any type of diamond jewelry, whether it’s a ring, earrings, a necklace, or a tennis bracelet. They provide all of the brilliance and sparkle of earth-mined diamonds but with a smaller environmental footprint and a lower cost.
The diamonds we sell come with a certificate from an independent lab that confirms their characteristics and verifies that they were grown in a laboratory. All diamonds sold by Jacob Mercari have a laser inscription of the corresponding diamond certificate etched onto the girdle of each diamond. Purchase from a reputable, established retailer who can provide clear information about the origin and quality of their diamonds.
